Free Bandwidth on TRON: How Much You Get and When It Resets

Free bandwidth on TRON sounds generous until you learn the unit: 600 bandwidth is not 600 transactions, it is 600 bytes. A multi-sig treasury blows through the whole day's allowance on one transfer. A long memo can push an otherwise free transaction into paying. And guides quoting 5,000 are still sitting uncorrected in a few wallet help centres. The allowance is genuinely free. It is just smaller, and stranger, than most guides admit.

How much free bandwidth on TRON you get

Free bandwidth on TRON: bandwidth is charged by the byte size of a transaction, so the allowance's real unit is 600 bytes of chain data per day, not a number of transfers.

It is fixed per account, not per wallet app and not per amount held. A wallet with 5 TRX and a wallet with 5 million TRX get an identical allowance.

One detail matters more than the number itself: the TRON free bandwidth limit is a governance parameter, not a law of the chain. Super Representatives set it through committee proposal #61, and they can vote it up or down. It has sat at 600 for years, but any guide quoting it as permanent is overstating things.

Ordinary transfers convert to a transaction count by byte size, and a multi-signature transaction does not fit inside the allowance at all.

The multi-signature row is not a rounding problem. A 3-of-5 transaction carries five signature slots, so a single transfer exceeds the entire daily allowance before it starts. Organizations running treasury multi-sig wallets pay a bandwidth burn on every transaction they have ever sent, whether they noticed it or not.

Sizes shift by a few bytes with memo length and address history, so treat 270 and 345 as working figures rather than constants. If you attach a long memo to a USDT transfer, you can push a 345-byte transaction past 400 and lose the free ride you were counting on.

When free bandwidth comes back (it does not reset at midnight)

Bandwidth recovery time works out to roughly 25 points per hour, trickling back continuously instead of arriving in one daily refill. The rate is the number that matters, because it tells you when your next transfer can go out.

It is the daily allowance spread evenly across the day:

600 bandwidth / 86,400 seconds = 0.0069 points per second ≈ 25 points per hour

Spend all 600 at 09:00 and you do not sit at zero until tomorrow. You have about 250 points back by 19:00, enough for a TRX transfer that evening, and the full 600 again at 09:00 the next morning. Spend 300 at noon and those 300 return gradually, reaching full at noon tomorrow.

Anyone planning a batch of transfers should queue them against that 25-per-hour drip rather than expecting a stockpile: a quiet week leaves nothing extra for a busy Monday.

Free bandwidth on TRON does not make USDT free

Free bandwidth covers the bytes of a USDT transfer and none of its computation, so a stablecoin transfer is never free no matter how much bandwidth you have.

Every USDT transfer is a smart contract call, and contract calls consume energy on top of bandwidth. A standard transfer needs about 65,000 energy, or about 131,000 if the recipient has never held USDT before. Energy has no free daily quota. Not a smaller one, none at all.

Bottom line: the free tier covers one line of that table and none of the other. Whatever your bandwidth situation, the energy side of a USDT transfer starts at zero every single time.

That is where the money sits. Why some guides say 5,000 free bandwidth

The 5,000 figure is outdated. It comes from TRON's Stake 1.0 era, before the current resource model, and it still sits uncorrected in several wallet help centres and older exchange guides.

Because the allowance is a committee parameter rather than a hardcoded constant, both numbers were true at different times, which is why the stale one survives. Frequently asked questions

Does a new TRON wallet get free bandwidth?

Only after the account is activated. Creating an address in a wallet app does nothing on-chain. The account exists once someone sends it TRX or tokens, and that first inbound transfer costs the sender a 1 TRX activation fee. Before activation there is no account to allocate resources to, so a freshly generated address that has never received anything has no bandwidth allowance at all. Once activated, the full 600 per day starts immediately.

How do I check how much free bandwidth I have left?

Most wallets show account bandwidth in the resources screen, though many display one combined figure rather than splitting free from staked. For the real split, TRONSCAN shows both pools separately on the account page, and the wallet/getaccountresource API returns freeNetLimit and freeNetUsed. Your remaining free bandwidth is the difference between those two values. The distinction matters whenever you have staked or received delegated bandwidth, because the pools are spent in a fixed order.

Can I send USDT using only free bandwidth?

No. Free bandwidth covers the transaction's 345 bytes, but a USDT transfer is a smart contract call that also needs about 65,000 energy, and there is no free energy quota. Having bandwidth to spare changes none of that, because the two resources are metered separately and the free tier only ever touches one of them. Does staking TRX increase my free 600 bandwidth?

No. The free allowance is capped at 600 whatever you stake. Staking gives you bandwidth from a separate allocation that sits alongside the free tier rather than raising its ceiling, so a heavily staked account and a brand new one report the identical 600 free points. Nothing you do to your own balance moves that number, because only a governance vote can change it.

Are TRX transfers free on TRON?

Yes, for the first two of the day. A free TRX transfer is about 270 bytes, so 600 free bandwidth covers two of them with 60 points to spare, and nothing is deducted from your balance.
