You send 50 USDT from TronLink and 6.5 TRX disappears from your balance. No warning, no line item, no explanation of where it went. The usual assumption is that the wallet took a cut. It did not: TronLink wallet fees are zero, and every TRX you lost went to the TRON network to pay for a resource called Energy.
That distinction matters because it tells you which lever to pull. You cannot negotiate with a wallet. You can change how you source Energy, and that decision is worth roughly $1.40 on every transfer you make.
Where TronLink wallet fees come from
TronLink charges no fee of its own. It is a non-custodial wallet: it holds your keys, signs transactions, and broadcasts them. It takes no percentage, no spread, and no flat charge on transfers, staking, or receiving. Every cost you see in the app is a TRON network charge that TronLink is passing through and displaying.
TRON meters two resources on every transaction:
- Energy pays for smart contract computation. A USDT (TRC-20) transfer is a contract call, so it needs Energy. There is no free daily allowance.
- Bandwidth pays for transaction size in bytes. Every account gets 600 free Bandwidth points per day.

What a USDT transfer costs in TronLink
A standard USDT transfer from a TronLink wallet with no Energy costs about 6.5 TRX, or $2.15 at a TRX price of $0.33. That figure comes from a fixed calculation: a USDT transfer consumes roughly 65,000 Energy, and TRON prices Energy at 100 SUN per unit after governance proposal #104 took effect on 29 August 2025. 65,000 × 100 SUN is 6,500,000 SUN, and 1 TRX is 1,000,000 SUN.

Two things surprise people here. The first is that sending to a brand-new address costs double, because the USDT contract has to create a storage record for an address that has never held the token. The second is that your USDT TRC20 transfer fee does not scale with the amount: moving 10 USDT and moving 10,000 USDT cost the same 6.5 TRX. On a small transfer that is a punishing percentage, which is why how TRON fees are calculated trips up so many first-time senders.
The three ways to cover Energy
You have three ways to source the Energy a USDT transfer needs: burn TRX, stake TRX, or rent Energy from a provider. TronLink supports all three, and the right one depends entirely on how often you send.
Burning TRX is the default. Do nothing, hold some TRX, and the network takes what it needs. It is the most expensive path per transfer and the only one that requires zero setup.
Staking TRX is built into TronLink under the Resources tab (Stake 2.0). You freeze TRX and receive Energy every 24 hours in proportion to your stake. At current network ratios, 1 TRX staked yields roughly 9.25 Energy per day, so covering one USDT transfer daily takes about 7,000 TRX locked up, around $2,300. Unstaking takes 14 days. Staking makes sense for high-volume senders and almost nobody else.
Renting Energy means buying delegated Energy from a provider for a fixed window, from one hour to 30 days. The Energy lands on your address, TronLink sees it in the Resources tab, and your next transfer consumes it instead of burning TRX. Market rates in 2026 run between 24 and 74 SUN per unit depending on the provider, so a typical 65,000-Energy rental costs about 2.34 TRX, near $0.77. TronLink GasFree wallet: flat, not free
GasFree lets you send USDT with no TRX at all, but the flat fee is usually higher than renting Energy. TronLink ships a separate GasFree wallet alongside your regular one. Instead of paying the network in TRX, you sign a permit transfer and a service provider settles the on-chain cost, deducting its fee in USDT from the amount you send.
The naming oversells it. GasFree removes the need to hold TRX; it does not remove the fee. Across the wallets that have shipped it, the charge sits at roughly 1 USDT per transfer, plus a one-time activation of about 1 USDT on your first send. TronLink's own documentation shows the fee on the confirmation screen rather than publishing a fixed rate, so check the number before you send a large amount.

GasFree beats burning by roughly half. It loses to renting by about 23 percent on every transfer. The case for GasFree is not price, it is that you hold zero TRX and want to keep it that way, which is a real situation for anyone paid in stablecoins who never wants to touch a second token.
Fixing a TronLink insufficient energy error
A TronLink insufficient energy warning means the transaction was never broadcast, so nothing was spent and your USDT is untouched. TronLink words it a few ways: "insufficient energy," "the energy balance is not enough to trigger the contract," or a failed transaction marked OUT OF ENERGY on TRONSCAN.
The cause is almost always one of three things. Your wallet has no Energy and not enough TRX to burn for it. You loaded 65,000 Energy but the recipient is a new address needing 131,000. Or your fee limit is set below what the transfer needs, in which case raising it in the advanced settings of the send screen fixes it without spending anything extra.
