TRON energy recovery time is 24 hours: Energy you spend comes back linearly over the next day, starting from the moment you spend it, not at a fixed daily reset. Spend 65,000 Energy on a USDT transfer at 09:00 and about 2,708 of it returns every hour, with the full amount back at 09:00 tomorrow.
That is the simple case. Send a second transfer before the first one has recovered, and the clock changes in a way most wallets never explain. This guide covers the exact rate, why recovery sometimes looks random, and what a half-recovered balance is worth in TRX.
TRON energy recovery time, hour by hour
Spent TRON Energy recovers in full 24 hours after you use it, at a steady rate. The protocol measures the window in 3-second blocks: 28,800 blocks make one day. Nothing you do, short of spending more, changes that clock.
For a single USDT transfer that used 65,000 Energy, recovery looks like this:
| Time since the transfer | Energy recovered | Still recovering |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 2,708 | 62,292 |
| 3 hours | 8,125 | 56,875 |
| 6 hours | 16,250 | 48,750 |
| 12 hours | 32,500 | 32,500 |
| 18 hours | 48,750 | 16,250 |
| 24 hours | 65,000 | 0 |
The same 24-hour window applies whether the Energy comes from TRX you staked yourself or from Energy someone delegated to you. If you are new to the resource model, our guide to understanding TRON energy covers where Energy comes from in the first place.
Energy regeneration depends on what you used
The recovery rate is set by the amount you spent, not by your Energy limit. TRON tracks one number, your used Energy, and shrinks it linearly to zero across the window. Spend 65,000 and 2,708 comes back per hour. Spend 13,000 on a small contract call and only 542 comes back per hour, yet that smaller amount still takes the full 24 hours.
Some explainers say you recover 1/24 of your limit every hour. That is only true when you drained the whole limit. An account with a 200,000 limit that spent 65,000 recovers at the 65,000 rate, and the other 135,000 was never gone.
Your limit itself is not fixed either. Staked Energy is a share of a network-wide pool of 180 billion Energy per day, split by how much TRX everyone has staked. When total network stake rises, the same stake buys less. The current ratio sits around 9.25 Energy per staked TRX per day, and it drifts week to week. So "fully recovered" means back to your current limit, which may differ slightly from yesterday's.
Why recovery looks random
Spending Energy again before the last spend has recovered merges both amounts into one pool with a new, weighted recovery window. This is the rule behind a long-running java-tron GitHub issue in which a user reported that recovery followed "no pattern." The formula, in blocks:
new window = (unrecovered usage × remaining window + new usage × 28,800)
/ (unrecovered usage + new usage)
A worked example on an account with a 130,000 Energy limit:
- 00:00: you send USDT and spend 65,000. The window is 24 hours.
- 12:00: half has recovered. 32,500 is still unrecovered, with 12 hours left on its clock.
- 12:00: you send again and spend another 65,000. Unrecovered usage jumps to 97,500.
- The new window is (32,500 × 12 + 65,000 × 24) / 97,500 = 20 hours.
All 97,500 now recovers together over those 20 hours, finishing at 08:00 the next day. Here is what that does to your balance at 24:00:
| At 24:00 | If the spends recovered separately | What TRON does |
|---|---|---|
| Still recovering | 32,500 | 39,000 |
| Available | 97,500 | 91,000 |
| Fully back | 36:00 | 32:00 |
The first 32,500 no longer finishes at 24:00, because it was stretched onto the longer merged window. The newer spend finishes earlier than 24 hours for the same reason. Nothing is lost, but any single moment looks off if you expect each transfer to run its own 24-hour clock. Frequent senders see this constantly, which is why a balance can read lower than their mental math says.
Is there a daily energy reset time?
No. There is no energy reset time on TRON, no midnight refill, and no rollover. Recovery is rolling and account-specific: your clock starts from your last spend, measured in blocks, regardless of time zone.
Two consequences follow. Unused Energy does not accumulate: an account that sits idle for a week still tops out at its limit, not seven days of Energy. And a daily "top-up" in a wallet UI is just the rolling recovery finishing, not a scheduled event.
Bandwidth recovers on the same 24-hour rolling rule. The 600 free Bandwidth every account receives follows it too, which our guide to free bandwidth on TRON covers in detail.
Sending with partially recovered Energy
A transfer uses whatever Energy you have and burns TRX only for the gap, so partial recovery still cuts your fee in proportion. At the current burn rate of 100 SUN per Energy unit, each 10,000 Energy you hold saves 1 TRX on the transfer.
| Hours since your last 65,000 spend | Available Energy | TRX burned on the next USDT transfer |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 6.5 |
| 6 | 16,250 | 4.875 |
| 12 | 32,500 | 3.25 |
| 18 | 48,750 | 1.625 |
| 24 | 65,000 | 0 |
These figures assume a standard transfer to an address that already holds USDT. Sending to a fresh address needs about 131,000 Energy, so the gap and the burn roughly double. Bandwidth is metered separately: the transfer also needs about 345 Bandwidth. When you send is a pricing decision. If you can wait 12 hours, the burn halves on its own.
How rented Energy recovers
Rented Energy is delegated Energy, so it recovers on the same 24-hour clock for as long as the rental lasts. What that means in practice depends on the duration you pick:
- 1 hour to 3 hours: covers one transfer. Recovery barely starts before the delegation ends.
- 1 day: one full transfer, plus a nearly recovered balance just before expiry.
- 7 days or 30 days: the rented amount refills every 24 hours, so 65,000 Energy on a 7-day rental covers about one standard transfer per day.
When a rental ends, the provider takes back the delegated Energy along with a proportional share of your unrecovered usage. You do not inherit a recovery debt, and you owe nothing for Energy you spent. The rental just ends. If you need more than one transfer inside a single day, rent a larger amount rather than a longer duration, because a longer rental does not refill any faster.
Checking recovery on-chain
The wallet/getaccountresource API returns EnergyLimit and EnergyUsed, and your available Energy is the difference. EnergyUsed is the unrecovered amount, so watching it fall is watching recovery happen. The wallet/getaccount response adds latest_consume_time_for_energy (your last spend) and energy_window_size (the current merged window, in blocks).
Wallets show available Energy against your total but hide the recovery window. Our walkthrough on how to check your TRON energy balance shows where each number lives in TronLink, Trust Wallet, Tronscan, and the raw API.
Can you speed up energy recovery?
No. You cannot speed up energy recovery: the 24-hour window is a protocol rule, and no fee, stake size, or transaction changes it. What you can change is how much Energy is available right now.
| Option | Speeds up recovery? | What it gets you | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wait | No | Full balance 24 hours after your last spend | Free |
| Stake more TRX | No | A higher limit, so you drain it less often | About 7,000 TRX locked per 65,000 Energy a day, 14-day unstake |
| Rent Energy | No, it adds Energy | 65,000 Energy in seconds | About 2.6 to 3.9 TRX for 1 hour |
| Let TRX burn | No | Transfer goes through now | 6.5 TRX per standard transfer |
If a transfer cannot wait, renting beats burning by roughly 40 to 60 percent at current prices. If you keep running into an empty balance, our guide to the TRON out of energy error covers the failure modes and fixes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does TRON energy reset daily?
No. TRON Energy never resets at a fixed time. It recovers linearly over the 24 hours after each spend, on a rolling clock tied to your account. If you spend nothing, your balance just stays at its limit. Unused Energy does not carry over or stack, so an idle week still leaves you with one day's limit.
How long does TRON energy take to recover?
Spent TRON Energy recovers fully 24 hours after you use it, at a steady rate. For a 65,000 Energy USDT transfer that is about 2,708 Energy per hour. If you spend again before recovery finishes, both amounts merge into one pool with a weighted window, so the older spend takes longer than 24 hours and the newer one finishes sooner.
Can I send USDT before my energy fully recovers?
Yes. The transfer uses the Energy you have and burns TRX only for the shortfall at 100 SUN per unit. With 32,500 Energy available, a standard transfer burns 3.25 TRX instead of 6.5 TRX. The transfer never fails for lack of Energy as long as your wallet holds enough TRX to cover the gap.
Does staking more TRX make energy recover faster?
No. A bigger stake raises your Energy limit, but spent Energy still takes 24 hours to come back. What a larger limit buys is headroom: you can send more transfers before the balance runs out. Covering one standard transfer a day takes about 7,000 TRX staked, locked for 14 days after you unstake.
Does rented energy recover during the rental?
Yes. Rented Energy is delegated, so it follows the same 24-hour recovery rule while the delegation lasts. A 7-day rental of 65,000 Energy covers roughly one standard transfer per day. When the rental ends, the unrecovered part goes back to the provider with the delegation, and you owe nothing for it.
Does bandwidth recover the same way as energy?
Yes. Bandwidth, including the 600 free units every activated account receives, recovers over the same rolling 24-hour window with the same merge rule. The two resources are tracked separately, so spending Energy has no effect on your Bandwidth clock and the reverse is also true.
The bottom line
TRON energy recovery time is a fixed 24-hour rolling window, and the only lever you control is how much Energy you have on hand.
- Occasional senders: there is nothing to recover between transfers days apart. Rent 65,000 Energy for an hour when you send.
- Daily senders on staked TRX: space transfers 24 hours apart, or accept a partial burn. At 12 hours the burn is already halved.
- Several transfers a day: your merged window will keep stretching. Size the Energy to the day's volume, by staking a larger baseline or renting a larger amount. You can rent TRON energy on TRONAgg for any duration from 1 hour to 30 days.
