You unstake 6,500 TRX, wait two weeks, and your balance has not moved. Meanwhile, every USDT transfer since the day you signed has been burning 6.5 TRX. Both surprises come from the same gap: most guides on how to unstake TRX show you the button, not what the button does. Unstaking is two transactions with a 14-day wait between them, and the stake stops working for you at the first one. Here are the steps for each wallet, what it costs, and when you can skip it.
How to unstake TRX: the short answer
To unstake TRX, sign an unstake transaction, wait 14 days, then sign a separate withdrawal. Some wallets call this "unfreeze TRX", but it is the same action. The steps match in every Stake 2.0 wallet:
- Unstake. Choose Energy or Bandwidth, enter the amount and sign. Partial amounts are allowed.
- Wait. The TRX stays locked for 14 days. The delay was 14 days on TRON mainnet when we checked
getUnfreezeDelayDayson November 2, 2026. - Withdraw. Sign a second transaction to move the TRX to your spendable balance.
The network takes no unstaking fee. Each transaction uses a little Bandwidth, which your free daily allowance normally covers.
What changes the moment you unstake
The Energy, Bandwidth and voting power tied to that TRX stop as soon as the transaction confirms, 14 days before you can spend the coins.
| What | When it changes | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Energy or Bandwidth | Immediately | The share from the unstaked TRX is gone |
| TRON Power | Immediately | The same amount is taken back, unused power first |
| Votes | Immediately, if unused power runs out | Removed proportionally across the Super Representatives you voted for |
| Voting rewards | From that point | Removed votes stop earning. Rewards already earned stay claimable |
| Your TRX | Days 0 to 14 | Not spendable and earns nothing |
| Your TRX | After day 14 | Waits until you withdraw it |
That gap has a price if the stake paid for your USDT transfers. At the November 2, 2026 chain ratio, 1 staked TRX produces about 10.01 Energy a day, so 6,500 TRX covers one standard 65,000 Energy transfer every 24 hours. Here is what replacing it costs during the wait:
| Cost over the 14-day wait | Calculation | TRX |
|---|---|---|
| Burn TRX for one transfer a day | 6.5 TRX x 14 | 91 |
| Or rent Energy at the 1-hour market average | 54.85 SUN x 65,000 x 14 | about 50 |
| Voting rewards you stop earning | 6,500 TRX at 3.31% a year for 14 days | about 8 |
The market price comes from TRONAgg's pricing API and the 3.31% from Staking Rewards, both read on November 2, 2026. A transfer to a wallet that has never held USDT needs about 131,000 Energy, so it costs about double. See how much TRON Energy a USDT transfer needs for the full breakdown. If you still send USDT, rent Energy for each transfer from the day you unstake.
TRONAgg price: The live price for renting 65,000 Energy for 1 hour on TRONAgg, enough for one standard USDT transfer, is on the pricing page, along with the per-unit rate in SUN.
Check these before you unstake
Most failed or regretted unstakes trace back to one of five checks that take about a minute.
- Is it native stake? These steps cover TRX you staked yourself under Stake 2.0. Exchange staking is redeemed inside the exchange, on its terms. sTRX has its own route, covered in our JustLend staking guide.
- Is any of it delegated? Delegated resources withhold the TRX behind them, and that part cannot be unstaked. Reclaim it first on Tronscan under My Resources, then Resource Overview, then Reclaim. Reclaiming is immediate unless you set a lock. A lock must expire first, and the current network maximum is about 30 days.
- Are you in TRONAgg Energy Staking? Undelegate from your own wallet; there is nothing to withdraw from TRONAgg Energy Staking. Removing an amount before its 24-hour period ends forfeits that period's reward, while completed periods stay owed. Undelegating does not unstake, so the 14 days start only when you do.
- Do you have Bandwidth? The 600 free daily points normally cover the transaction. If you have used them, the network burns 1,000 SUN per point, and an address with no TRX can fail.
- Have you claimed rewards? Claiming is separate and allowed once every 24 hours. Claim before you unstake so your wallet shows a clean figure for what you earned.
Steps by wallet
Tronscan is the reference route because it shows every pending amount and works with TronLink and Ledger. Labels below come from each wallet's support pages and can change between app versions.
Tronscan with TronLink or Ledger
- Go to tronscan.org and connect your wallet.
- Open your address menu, then Resources, to reach the Stake 2.0 page.
- On the My Stake tab, select Unstake TRX.
- Keep the resource selection or change it, enter the amount and select Unstake.
- Sign in your wallet, or review and sign on your Ledger device.
TronLink app
To unstake TRX in TronLink:
- Open the staking screen for your account and tap Unstake.
- Choose the resource to reduce using the tabs at the top.
- Enter the amount. The app previews the Energy or Bandwidth and TRON Power you will have left.
- Submit and sign.
On a multisig account, you need the Owner permission or the Unstake Asset in Stake 2.0 permission under Active.
Trust Wallet
To unstake TRX in Trust Wallet:
- Open TRX and tap your staked amount.
- Tap Unstake and enter the amount.
- Tap Continue, review the details and confirm.
Trust Wallet's guide does not list a separate withdrawal step. If your balance is unchanged after 14 days, use the check in the next section.
Withdraw your TRX after 14 days
TRON does not return your coins by itself. You must withdraw unstaked TRX with a second transaction, which is why balances look unchanged on day 15. On Tronscan, the available amount appears under To Be Withdrawn on the Stake 2.0 page. Select Withdraw, confirm, and sign. TronLink shows the same action in its staking area.
Three rules help here:
- Each unstake has its own clock. Three unstakes on three different days mature on three different days.
- One withdrawal collects everything that has matured. You do not need one transaction per unstake.
- A new unstake withdraws matured amounts automatically. The network pays them out in the same transaction.
If your wallet shows no withdrawal option, search your address on Tronscan and open its staking details. An amount under To Be Withdrawn is still yours. Connect a compatible wallet to Tronscan and withdraw it there.
How to cancel an unstake
You can cancel during the 14 days, and the TRX is staked again as soon as the transaction confirms. On Tronscan's Stake 2.0 page, open My Stake, select Cancel Unstake in the Unstaking section, confirm and sign. Your Energy or Bandwidth and TRON Power come back.
Two limits catch people out:
- It is all or nothing. Cancelling covers every unstake still in its waiting period. To keep one, cancel all and unstake that amount again, which restarts its 14 days.
- Check your votes afterwards. TRON's docs say TRON Power returns but do not say removed votes do. Open your votes and cast them again if the total dropped.
Anything already past 14 days is not cancelled. It goes to your balance in the same transaction.
Why your unstake failed
A TRX unstake error usually means the amount is unavailable, the account has hit a protocol limit, or the signer lacks permission. The API messages below come from TRON's documentation, and wallets may reword them.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Invalid unfreeze_balance | The amount exceeds what is available, often because part is delegated | Reclaim the delegation or enter a lower amount |
no frozenBalance(Energy) or no frozenBalance(BANDWIDTH) | No Stake 2.0 balance under that resource | Switch the resource tab |
unfreezing times is over limit | 32 unstakes are already pending | Wait for one to finish its 14 days |
no unFreeze balance to withdraw | Nothing has matured yet | Check the unlock time on Tronscan |
| Trust Wallet unstaking error | Often an address holding both Stake 1.0 and Stake 2.0 | Unstake the exact Stake 2.0 amount from Tronscan, decimals included, then choose Max for the rest |
| Transaction rejected for lack of resources | Free Bandwidth is used up and there is no TRX to burn | Add a little TRX or wait for Bandwidth to recover |
| Permission or signature error | Multisig, or permissions were changed | Sign with keys the active permission accepts |
If you did not change those permissions yourself, stop and review your account. Our TRON wallet security guide explains how permission attacks work.
Do you need to unstake at all?
Unstake when you need the coins. If the real problem is unused Energy or a stake that no longer fits your transfers, another move may cost less. This table is general information, not financial advice.
| Your situation | What to consider | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| You need the TRX in two weeks or later | Unstake only the amount you need | The rest keeps its Energy and votes |
| You need the TRX sooner | Nothing shortens the wait on your own address. Early-unstake services buy the position for a fee | One service advertises 7% to 10%, or 455 to 650 TRX on a 6,500 TRX stake, and it can require control of your address |
| Your stake's Energy sits unused | Keep the stake and earn TRX by selling the Energy | Votes stay in place, but the income rate can change |
| The stake exists only for occasional USDT transfers | Unstake and rent Energy per transfer | About 6,494 TRX freed, against about 3.57 TRX per transfer at the market average |
| You changed your mind | Cancel the unstake | It covers all pending amounts |

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to unstake TRX?
Fourteen days on TRON mainnet, as checked on November 2, 2026. The delay is a chain parameter that Super Representatives can change by vote, and it runs from your unstake transaction. Your TRX then stays in the waiting state until you sign a withdrawal.
Can I unstake only part of my TRX?
Yes. Stake 2.0 supports partial unstaking, with up to 32 unstakes pending at once. Each runs on its own 14-day clock. The stake you leave in place keeps its Energy or Bandwidth, and its votes unless the reclaimed TRON Power reaches them.
Does it cost anything to unstake TRX?
The network charges no unstaking fee. Each transaction uses Bandwidth, which the 600 free daily points normally cover. Without free Bandwidth the network burns 1,000 SUN per point, usually a fraction of a TRX. The larger cost is the Energy and voting rewards you stop receiving.
Do I earn rewards while TRX is unstaking?
No. TRX in the 14-day wait earns nothing, and votes removed by the unstake stop earning immediately. Rewards earned before you unstaked are not lost, so you can still claim them. Votes that remain on your staked balance keep earning as normal.
Can I unstake TRX without waiting 14 days?
Not on your own address under Stake 2.0. No wallet, exchange or support team can shorten the network delay. Older Stake 1.0 balances use a separate method without the queue, but it removes all your votes at once. Early-unstake services pay you for the position, charge a fee, and can require control of your address.
Why is my balance unchanged after 14 days?
Your TRX is most likely waiting to be withdrawn, because the network does not move it automatically. Search your address on Tronscan and look under To Be Withdrawn in the staking details. Select Withdraw and sign the transaction, and the TRX reaches your balance once it confirms.
Which path fits you
The right route depends on why you are leaving:
- Small stake that only covered USDT fees. Unstake it, set a reminder for day 14, and rent Energy when you send instead of holding the capital.
- Regular USDT sender. Unstake in parts. Each transfer you keep covering with stake is one you do not have to burn or rent for.
- Holder with spare Energy. You may not need to leave. Keep the stake and put the unused Energy to work.
